In New York City HBO has just launched it's latest project - HBO Voyeur.
A brand new project directed by Jake Scott (...son of Ridley). It’s a multimedia display where you can peep into the goings-on in eight NYC apartments in one building, and see how the lives of their occupants are intertwined.

Google goes green with Blackle

When your screen is white - an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts. Yet when it's black it consumes only 59 watts.

Mark Ontkussh wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption.

Unbusiness cards

For those of you who don't work for a big cheese corporate with fancy pants business cards, Moo is definitely worth a look. They've taken what is essentially a fairly boring & standard product, the old business card, and breathed into it, a new lease of life.

Enter the unbusiness card. These pint sized little beauties are about half the size of your normal business card so they already look different. Plus they link in with Flickr so you can use your Flickr photos on the back of each card (you can use as many images as you want to make a variety of cards) to personalise them.

They're tiny, they look hot & they're cheap. What more could a girl want? except maybe a proper job...

Call me a neophiliac but I love to be the first to try something new and this site is mecca for people that love a good beta. Instead of surfing aimlessly round the web looking for new startups launching betas or waiting patiently to be invited to join the first band of trial users, InviteShare let's you invite yourself to the party.

The site has covers a bunch of startups in beta mode and lists the invitations available. It lets those sites post the number of invitations available and minions like me request an invite to participate.

One of my favorite new music distribution services turns one year old today - Amie Street.

Amie Street’s business model is dead simple - Artists upload their music for download on the site. Users download songs, with the starting price at free. When downloads pick up for popular songs, the price starts to rise, all the way up to $0.99. If a song gets to $0.30 or so, you know its popular. The artist keeps 70% of revenues after the first $5 in sales. Songs are sold DRM-free in MP3 format. Users can also generate credit in Amie Street by recommending songs. Only a few recommendations are allowed, but if the song you promote does well, you get credit in your account that you can use to buy other songs.

Well known artists are starting to use the service. Barenaked Ladies, Master P, Romeo and the Meat Puppets are all distributing music on the site, which has now sold over half a million tracks to users.

Their pricing model encourages music lovers to discover and buy new music. If a song is free, it hasn’t been discovered by a wider audience. If a song is 98 cents, it’s already a must-hear hit.

Remember the guy with glasses in the back row who never quite got it? Who never kicked the football far enough or could scull enough beer fast enough to enter the kingdom of coolness? Swaptree now in beta

The latest addition to shopping & trading online is Swaptree, a site which lets users trade books, videos, music and games peer to peer.

You simply log on and create a list of things you're looking to trade and a list of items you'd like to trade for. Swaptree reviews your lists and sets up the trades for you, the idea being that you're willing to trade anything on your 'trade' list for anything on your 'want' list.

It doesn't cost you anything to trade so it looks like their business model depends on advertiser revenue rather than any user generated revenue.

They're in the midst of beta testing and are set to launch 4th July to the public.

Storytron

Gamers wanting a deeper narrative, story lovers wishing they could step inside the action, or simply anyone interested in the next wave of gaming will want to check out Storytron, software for interactive storytelling that is now available in pre-alpha.

Creative types can use Storytron's Storyworld Authoring Tool (called Swat) to construct a "universe of dramatic possibilities" by establishing the personalities and agendas of a set of characters, along with other elements like locations, props and occurrences. Players within one of these created Storyworlds are story protagonists; their actions shape events.

Some in the gaming community are skeptical of Crawford's efforts but if you're an intrepid early adopter, you can download a version of Swat and start creating your dramas today.

The idea of net.art has been around for quite some time and is starting to get some attention on the web as several projects become more visible.
Wikipedia defines this kind of Internet art as art projects for which the Net is both a sufficient and necessary condition of viewing/expressing/participating.Net.artists use the web to communicate – often utilising URL addresses as part of the piece or message and also to give the ‘piece of art’ a sense of ownership. And in English... this basically means that if the artwork is made up of a URL and then a clever message on the homepage when The URL loads, then that particular work cannot be reproduced without the URL because the URL is intrinsic to the piece. Got it? Here’s an example – log on to www.hell.com and you will receive the following homepage. This my friends, is net.art.

Whilst some of you will be scratching your heads trying to work out why someone would bother creating that, looking at that or even writing about it, remember that part of being innovative is looking for people who think and approach things differently. Net.art is a completely different approach to not only the idea of art, but also the function of web pages and internet addresses.

So geek out over that.

By now we’ve all wasted countless hours downloading video content from Youtube.com, the latest portal in the rise of me-media. Anyone can create video content and upload it onto Youtube where users can search by subject or content creator. One set of videos which has been creating quite a stir of late is LonelyGirl15. The downloads started out as a series of videos apparently filmed and edited by a young teenager who is homeschooled by strict religious parents. The videos appear as if they are “home diaries” fi lmed by her friend Daniel and cover the day to day aspects of her life as a teenager.

Since the videos started airing there has been much controversy online about whether the footage (always tightly scripted, shot and edited) is the work of a professional fi lmmaking group. Adding to the speculation is the URL www.lonelygirl15.com
(currently inactive) which was live and registered 2 weeks before the
first video appeared on YouTube. A quick Google search on “Lonelygirl15” will give you over 2 million links suggesting that this is one project which has captured
the interest of many users online.

Speculation surrounding the ‘project’ suggests that the videos were created by a talent agent company as a ‘microdrama’ using Youtube as a new platform “giving birth to a new artform”. I work in petrol or slippers or pasta I hear you say.... what use is Lonelygirl15 to me? Well... hush a while... Judging by the incredibly high profi le and enormous popularity of the project(go on...do a search yourself) we can
see that an innovative approach to marketing (using a mini-drama narrative
to showcase talent) and an innovative distribution channel (free exposure on
Youtube) can provide more talkability and profile than your average television
spot ever could. And the nice thing about keeping abreast of new media
is that often it takes more guts and creativity than it does dollars. In the
case of Lonelygirl15, it took very few dollars indeed.

We must have a hundred different brands of water, flavoured water, spring water, health water, smart water and well beingwater but this little company from Melbourne has put yet another new spin on an old space. I like it.

Balance Water

While we're on the subject of innovative beverages from down under I thought I'd post on Balance Water. This water has also been around for a while and comes in a variety of flavours. They have water for travelling, water for kids and water for women. It's a widely known fact that women need special kinds of water so this product comes at an opportune time really... and quite frankly, who wouldn't want to drink pure spring water gently infused with 8 herbal essences?

It's a good looking bottle, nice font and a well-timed value proposition. First we had water that beat tiredness & increased immunity,now we have water that gives us a sense of balance and wellbeing. There's also water on the market here now that has a magazine on the front of the bottle. Apparently it's made a smallish splash in the market here (excuse the pun) but one would wonder why we would want to read a magazine the size of a small hankerchief stuck onto a plastic bottle when we could open the luxurious pages of Vanity Fair and relax with a little liquid wellbeing...Doesn't sound like a media revolution to me....

But the Balance Water is worth a look in.

Innovative Nutrient Water

This is another little ripper product from a small Australian company, it's called Nutrient Water. Its been on the market for a while now and comes in four flavours I think - Energy, Immunity and two others I can't remember. It's taken the Nudie brand voice and personality into a more grown up space which is nice because let's face it - I think we're all a bit Nudie-ed out down under.

The copy on this bottle says:
Energy
Directions: Mix with individuals displaying symptoms of tiredness, fatigue or severe procrastenation.
Warning: Excessive consumption may result in the demise of alarm clocks, motivational speakers, personal trainers and phrases like "not tonight honey I'm too tired".
Apply liberally for fast relief from other beverages.

Mashup

You might have heard people talking about 'mashups' lately as companies like Google,Yahoo! and Facebook look for new ways to innovate their provision of content between applications.

A Mashup is basically a website or web application that seamlessly combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience.Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public interface or API. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web feeds (e.g. RSS or Atom). (Wikipedia)

It's basically sites sourcing content from other sites so that they don't have to provide all the content themselves and they can present more value to the user.

Unlike the days of old when companies like PlayStation used to protect their application programming interfaces to ensure that only selected game developers could develop for the platform, the new players setting the field are looking for smarter and more cost effective ways of providing value. If the 90s Internet was all about community, then we thought that content was king, the future is most certainly about collaboration.

Google does the mashup dance

TV makes a bigger move online

With the launch of MeeVee; TV for me online :: the idea of us watching TV over the Internet instead of through our loungeroom boxes seems less remote a possibility as one might have thought.

Available only in the US at the moment, the site allows you to select from a bunch of station & cable content, together with internet TV and personalise your own TV channels all watchable through a downloaded TV screen widget.

Whilst some will scoff that it will take much more than that to move the computer to the loungeroom, we know that strong and original content in high demand will always drive usage of other viewing apps.

Whilst we all geeked out over Youtube and Current.TV, the winner has to be closer to MeeVee but encompassing the fantastic quality of some of the less mainstream Current.TV material and not forcing us to sift through pages of bad singing and I-wanna-be famous yank videos on Youtube.

Whilst I won't be moving to America and transporting my mac into the loungeroom just yet, this'll an interesting one to watch.

eBay is the shortest route to liquidation

It's not just user profiles & game avatars that are up for sale on eBay, companies are using it as a short route to liquidation too. Techcrunch has noted atleast 6 companies who have used eBay to get out of town and another company 'Crispads' is still up for auction at a current asking price of $90,000.

Zookoda, an Australian email marketing and services company, is next up.

Digg profile for sale on eBay

I posted earlier on about Netscape's new offering set to compete with Digg.com, there's been a bunch of news about top Digg users being offered big coin to move across to Netscape's product.

Technorati has a great story on a Digg user 'geekforlife' (user .00ranked 75th) who has apparently upped stumps and sold hs Digg user profile on eBay.

The auction was back in July and after 35 bids it was sold for USD822. The user has submitted 748 Digg stories, 39 of which have made it to the Digg home page.

There are two arguments for the account having value. First, of course, is the fact that Netscape is now paying top Digg users to switch over. Netscape is looking for actual users, not accounts, though, and so there’s little chance of this account being turned into a valuable income stream at Netscape. Second, high ranking Digg accounts count more than others when they Digg a story, making that story more likely to go to the home page. The account therefore has value, if Digg doesn’t simply turn it off.

This story has, of course, already been put on Digg.

Flippa goes from second life to first

Ok this is going to spin you but I am exhibiting some of my street art photography hanging in my gallery in second life...in the first life. I've selected a bunch of street art stencil photographs and they're now hanging in a cool new little restaurant in Surry Hills called Table for 20.

All the details for the restaurant on the blog; it reads ::
"In Surry Hills one guy is reinventing the idea of the evening meal by opening his space for a weekly gathering of friends & strangers. So grab yourself a seat, pass the wine & pitch in because this is neighbourhood dining at it's very best. There are thousands of normal restaurants in Sydney. This is not one of them."

A first Look at A Second Life

What is Second Life exactly?

Second Life is what’s known as a MMORG which stands for Massive Multiple Online Role Playing Game. This basically means that it is an online game to which thousands of users around the world interact in different roles (or characters) simultaneously. It’s also often called a ‘metaverse’ a phrase coined by Neal Stephenson's science fiction novel SnowCrash (1992). Stephenson's definition of metaverse refers to a high definition 3D digital virtual world where users, represented by their avatars (game characters) can meet and interact just like they do in the physical world.

Instead of building websites like in today's Internet, Metaverse developers build fully 3D virtual spaces (scapes) which can closely mimic the physical world, or be as different from the "real world" as the imagination of the developers permits. For example, in the Metaverse you can visit an accurate replica of a real city, a future imaginary space settlement on Mars, a micro-scale world where you can see individual molecules and cells, etc.’ (Quote source :: uvvy.com)

Second Life was founded by Philip Rosedale of Linden Lab in San Francisco California in 1999. Version 1.0 was launched on the 23rd June 2003 and is continually updated as Linden Lab re-release new versions to support the evolution in-world. In 2004 SL had 14,000 residents, in 2005 it had 59,000 and now in 2006 Second Life consists of 216 km sq of virtual land that hosts over 514,000 residents who hold over 500 events a day and spend upwards of USD6.8M a year on resident-to-resident goods and services.

Still think it’s insignificant and only for nerd losers?

I'll post some more but in the meantime; check it out :: whilst it's still in what marketing people would call "the early adopter" phase, as broadband penetration increases and drives prices down (especially in Australia) and as more corporates move in world and the game gets more press, we'll find that parts of the game become more mainstream.

The only way to get a real sense of it is to check it out for yourself.

Inside the Machinima

Machinima is the creation of film or movie content inside a video game. For those of you not playing second life until 5am in the morning, let me explain…

You can create sets inside a virtual world game which feature houses, landscapes, movie theatres or any kind of background you could imagine in real life. You can dress the avatars (characters inside the video game), have them speak in-game via a microphone and even have them act out a pre-prepared script just as you would in real life. In fact, professional machinima is more similar to real life than you might think.

You can shoot from any angle inside most games (if you have the right equipment), you can then edit & create effects in post product just as you would for normal movie content. Where multiple actors are employed, teams emply different real life individuals to play their avatars and follow the director’s script.

In fact, one machinima workshop we went to, a team showed us how they had built a series of cars & machines inside a virtual reality game :: when we looked at the sets we realised that even in-game they had only built two dimensional objects because they only needed to shoot them from one side!

Whilst machinima is gaining popularity amongst avid gamers it won't be long before mainstream cottons on thanks to the likes of Gofish.com and Youtube.com distributing the content to a wider audience.

Imagine if you created a whole TVC in-world . . No talent fees, cheaper location & post-production . . Not to mention a greater variety of distribution channels.
Sound crazy? I bet a mainstream brand will jump this puppy in no time.

Street art is traditionally such an after hours affair but this guy who was right across from my hotel was doing incredible stuff. I know that this style of art has been around for a while but the fusion of spraycans and fine art technique means that the finished pieces look incredible and unlike anything I'd seen before.

What's more it's a rare treat to be able to watch a street artist working in front of you. Bet it won't be long before a big brand taps into this 'live street art' idea and uses it for some instant street cred...

Netscape launches its own version of Digg

In an attempt to regain user preference for the Netscape site AOL have launched a beta version of the new Netscape which works in a similar way to Digg.com. Users post stories of interest and the more votes a story gets, the higher up the rankings it moves on the homepage. The essential difference between Digg & the net Netscape seems to be that Netscape also has a bunch of editor bloggers who pick out the top ranking stories and follow them up with commentary and supplementary editorial.

I don't know about you but I like it...For a category like toilet tissue where innovation is usually limited to the inclusion of an additional "ply" for added softness, this is a nice departure from the norm.

Blistex has taken the popular marketing positioning of ‘wellbeing’ & applied it to lip balm. Now you can have ‘renewed’ lips, ‘relaxed’ lips, hell you can even have ‘uplifted’ lips. Presumedly these so-called ‘wellbeing’ benefits are supposed to benefit your whole body; presumably the ‘wellbeing-ness’ travels through your big kissers to the rest of your system..interesting…

Just like "ideas" and "innovation" became the corporate love children of the suit, so too is "wellbeing" the new adoptee of the marketer. Time to get off this train?

This newspaper is aimed directly at the kiddie market because, as we all know, kids need global news. Not only do they need global news, they need limitless advertising that comes with global news, all in bite sized chunks created especially for them.

A novel idea to say the least although you have to wonder whether reading the news at 8 years old will ever be cool. This little ripper opened up in sydney a while ago and it'll be interesting to see what happens...people predicted the demise of the cinema when video came in & let's be honest, that was never going to happen. the million dollar question is...will redroom cause the local video store to go down in a blaze of vhs glory? If I was blockbuster I'd be an anxious puppy right about now but then if I was redroom, I'd be asking myself why I didn't invest in expiring downloadable compact video files sold online instead of a DVD ATM which albeit innovative, still feels kinda analogue :: although I do love the line "video stores are so last decade"...

This design was on the front window of a little shop I visited in Amsterdam, it's the little stuff like this that makes me love Nike :: one of the only companies who seem to balance the massification of their brand with the guy on the street who wouldn't be caught dead at a sneaker love in but just wants a cool pair of shoes...

hp have created an interactive exhibition in amsterdam while i was there :: they're getting arty types to send in their own pieces which are then be displayed online in the hp gallery & you can bring in your disk & they'll print it out to hang in the offline gallery too...a great promotional vehicle giving hp some creative street cred in a relevant & dare i say it "authentic" channel....
